CTA Behavior Reference

Last updated: September 29, 2026

Every Agent CTA has a Behavior, which decides how the destination opens when a visitor selects the button. This page explains the options and which one to pick.

If you are adding a CTA for the first time, start with Setting Up Agent CTAs and come back here when you reach the Behavior field.

What are the CTA behavior options?

Behavior

What happens

Choose it when

iframe

The destination opens inside the widget, so the visitor stays in the conversation.

The destination allows embedding, and the next step is short, such as a booking page.

New tab

The destination opens in a separate browser tab.

The destination blocks embedding, needs the full page, or uses its own JavaScript embed.

What does "Open automatically" do?

With Open automatically ticked, the iframe opens by itself the moment the CTA is triggered, instead of waiting for the visitor to select the button.

It suits a flow where the next step is the whole point, such as a booking page after the visitor has already agreed to a meeting. Leave it off when the visitor may still want to keep talking, because opening a panel over the conversation without being asked can read as pushy.

The option applies to iframe behavior only.

How do you choose between iframe and new tab?

Start with what the destination allows. Many sites send security headers that stop other sites embedding them, and that is decided by the destination, not by Docket. If the page refuses to be embedded, it renders blank inside the widget no matter what you configure.

Test the exact URL in an iframe before choosing that behavior. If it loads cleanly and fits, iframe keeps the visitor in the conversation. If it does not, new tab is the reliable choice, and for a long form or a multi-step flow it is often the better experience anyway.

What does the default CTA behavior do?

Marking a CTA as the default is separate from iframe and new tab. The default CTA is the button shown at the start of the conversation, and again whenever no other CTA's instructions apply.

Only one CTA can be the default, and your CTAs share a single button slot. When a more specific CTA matches, it replaces the default rather than appearing next to it.

How do you check a CTA behaves correctly?

  • The label reads as an action a visitor would recognise, within the 30 character limit.

  • The instructions describe a situation, so the agent knows when to show it.

  • The behavior matches what the destination allows.

  • In Preview, the button appears only when the conversation warrants it.

  • The destination loads correctly from the real deployed page, not just from Preview.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my iframe CTA blank?

The destination is refusing to be embedded, which is a setting on that site. Switch the CTA to a new tab, or point it at a page you control that allows embedding.

Can I use iframe for Calendly or RevenueHero?

Sometimes. Simple booking links often embed cleanly, while routing forms and JavaScript embeds usually do not. Test the exact link first. See Connecting RevenueHero or Calendly to Your Agent.

Does behavior affect whether the CTA appears?

No. Whether a CTA appears is decided by its instructions. Behavior only decides how the destination opens once the visitor selects it.

Can different CTAs on one agent use different behaviors?

Yes. Behavior is set per CTA, so one can open in the widget while another opens in a new tab.

Is meeting booking a CTA behavior?

No. Meeting booking is its own card in the Agent CTAs section and books inside the conversation rather than opening a URL. See Intelligent Routing for Docket Marketing Agent Meetings.
